Nigeria has risen to become the country with the second-highest number of poor people globally, with approximately 89 million citizens, or 40% of the population, living below the poverty line.
This stark reality was disclosed by Yemi Kale, the former Statistician-General of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and current Group Chief Economist at Afreximbank. Kale made the revelation while speaking at The Platform Nigeria‘s Independence Day event, themed “Rebuilding Our Nation.”
Kale emphasized the sheer scale of the crisis, noting that fewer than 20 countries worldwide have a total population larger than Nigeria’s estimated number of poor citizens.
He attributed the catastrophic situation not to a lack of resources, but to a series of policy missteps and a delay in implementing critical reforms, despite clear warning signs issued over a decade ago.
He argued that earlier action could have significantly reduced the crushing fiscal and inflationary pressures currently devastating households and businesses. Kale specifically criticized prolonged monetary and exchange rate distortions,which he said systematically eroded investor confidence and suffocated economic growth.
The Inevitable, Painful Path of Reform
While acknowledging the harshness of the government’s recent economic reforms (such as subsidy removal and exchange rate unification), Kale insisted they were unavoidable, stating, “There is really no credible alternative.”
He stressed that the nation’s immense potential can only be unlocked through “consistent and integrity-driven execution of the reforms.”
However, Kale urged the government to ensure the process is humane and socially just. He called for the reforms to be well-sequenced and supported by strong social protection measures to ease the burden on vulnerable citizens.
“The challenge is to ensure that the path of reform is as painless and socially just as possible,” he added.
Kale concluded that the government’s primary responsibility is not to avoid the inevitable reforms, but to sustain them while simultaneously strengthening welfare systems to ensure that the economic transformation benefits all Nigerians.
