Edo 2024: Ex-NBA president, Olumide Akpata, emerges LP candidate

A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Olumide Akpata, has emerged the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for the September 21 Edo governorship election.

Akpata polled 316 votes to defeat other aspirants at the party’s primary election, held in Benin on Friday.

Mr Kenneth Imansuangbon got seven votes, while Professor Sunday Eromosele and Mr Sergius Ogun scored seven votes and four votes respectively.

The Chief Returning Officer of the election and Deputy Governor of Abia, Mr Emechulu Ikecbukwu, shortly after declaring Akpata the winner of the contest, said that the party represents truth, hard work, and transparency.

While commending the aspirants for showing the spirit of sportsmanship, he urged Akpata to carry other aspirants along.

In his acceptance speech, Akpata pledged good governance if elected as governor of the state.

He said; “It’s not just about the Labour Party’s triumph but also about Edo State and Nigeria’s prosperity. We must invest in our people, empowering them with the skills needed to forge not just a resilient Labour Party but a stronger, more prosperous state and nation.”
