Who is Hafsat Abubakar Bakari? Profile of newly appointed CEO of NFIU

Ms Hafsat ABubakar Bakari was appointed as the new Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) by President Bola Tinubu on February 20, 2024.

The NFIU is the central national agency responsible for the receipt of disclosures from reporting organisations, the analysist of these disclosures and the production of intelligence for dissemination to competent authorities.

The Unit is domiciled in the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

Hafsat Abubakar is a lawyer and financial intelligence expert with years of experience in anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing, and counter-proliferation financing.

She has served as the Head of the General Services Unit; Head of the Strategy and Reorientation Unit, and Head of the Board Secretariat of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Prior to her appointment as the new NFIU head, Ms Bakari served as the Deputy Director in the NFIU; she is taking over from Modibbo Hamman-Tukur.
