Who is Jide Idris?

Dr. Jide Idris was, on February 16, 2024, appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

Biography

Jide Idris is a healthcare practitioner with over 30 years’ experience in Medical Practice, Healthcare Systems Management, Consulting, Pharmaceutical and Research. In Medical Practice, he has worked as a medical doctor in his early and mid-career stages at hospitals and for private companies in Nigeria.

He also worked with two premier healthcare consulting companies covering healthcare planning and research, hospital management and direct provision of clinical services.

Idris is a former Lagos state’s commissioner for health under Babatunde Fashola (2007 to 2015) and Akinwunmi Ambode (2015 to 2019).

Jide Idris is a Lagosian, an indigene of Lagos, a Southwestern state in Nigeria.

Education

Idris attended King’s College, Lagos, Nigeria for his secondary school education.

His tertiary education was at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria where he obtained a MBBS degree in medicine between 1975 and 1980.

He also Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the Yale University, Connecticut, USA.

Idris was also a post-doctoral research fellow at the Columbia University, New York, USA from February 1998 to February 1999.

He served as the Lagos State Commissioner for Health under the administration of Akinwunmi Ambode.

Upon his replacement, he started FHS Medical Consulting Ltd.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Idris as the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) on February 16, 2024.

Career

He is a member of the American Public Health Association, the Nigerian Medical Association and a Board member, University of Ibadan Research Foundation as well as the Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria.

Idris served as Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Columbia University in the City of New York in Irvin Center for Clinical Research, Division of Cardiology between February 1998 and February 1999.

He was later appointed as Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health in February 1999. Idris occupied the position until February 2007.

Idris would later serve as the Commissioner for Health, Lagos state from 2007 to 2019.

He led the Lagos State response team in mobilizing the resources, coordinating the collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria and other International partners in the rapid containment of the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in Lagos and Nigeria.

He was also involved in the State’s Covid-19 response.
