The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has confirmed the disruption of its rerun election in the Enugu South 1 state constituency by suspected thugs.

The electoral umpire confirmed the disruption in a statement on its official X handle on Wednesday.

Recall that the commission had fixed February 14 for the by-election and rerun polls suspended in Taraba and Enugu states.

Although no casualties were reported, INEC said election materials were destroyed, and voters were prevented from casting their votes.

The commission, however, said that the process was unfolding peacefully for the supplementary election for Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State.
“A report from our Enugu State office indicates that hoodlums have disrupted the court-ordered re-run election in the Enugu South 1 State Constituency.

“Our officials have been safely evacuated with assistance from security agencies.
“In contrast, the supplementary election in the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State is unfolding peacefully across three local government areas,” the statement read.
