Niger: Suleja LG denies banning sales of alcohol

The Chairman of Suleja Local Government Area in Niger state, Alhaji Ishaku Bawa, has denied media reports that the council has banned sales of alcohol in the area.

The chairman was reacting to social media reports that he ordered the ban on the sale of alcohol in the council.

Bawa said the law banning sales of alcohol in the state had been in existence since the late former governor of the state Abdulkadir Kure’s administration.

“Suleja local government did not ban the sales of alcohol, the law banning sales of alcohol has being in existence before now.

“Therefore, we are only working within the ambit of the law and what we are saying is that, those selling alcohol should operate within the ambit of the law,” he said.

According to him, we are guided by the law and would continue to operate within the ambit of the law.

He, however, pledged the council’s support to Governor Umaru Bago “New Niger agenda” to increase internally generated revenue (IGR) for the transformation of the state.
