Who is Gumsu Abacha? Biography and Real Name
Gumsu Abacha is one of the daughters of late military Head of State, Sani Abacha. Her real name is Fatima Gumsu Abacha.
She is a namesake to Hajiya Ya-Gums Mustafa ibn Umar Elkanemi also known as Hajiya Gumsu Mai Deribe (Ya Zara).

She is the daughter of late General Sani Abacha, a Nigerian military officer and politician who ruled as the military head of state after seizing power in 1993 until his death in 1998.
Her mother’s name is Dr. Mrs. Maryam Sani Abacha.
Abacha and Maryam’s marriage in 1965 resulted in the birth od six boys and three girls. The first child, Ibrahim, died in a plane crash in 1996.

Gumsu’s father, late General Sani Abacha, was a Kanuri man whose parents were from Nganzai LGA of Borno state.
Her mother, Dr. Mrs Maryam Sani Abacha is a Shuwa woman of Jere LGA, Borno state.

Gumsu Abacha’s marriage has over the last few years gained a spotlight in Nigeria’s media, including social media.
In 2019, it was discovered she had divorced her husband, Bayero Fadil Mohamadou, after 20 years of marriage.
The couple tied the knot in May 1999 at a grand ceremony in Kano. In between those two decades of marital odyssey, Bayero and Gumsu have five children.
Bayero Fadil Mohamadou is a Cameroon-born billionaire who currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cameroonian Agency for Standards and Quality, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Standardization and Metrology for Islamic Countries, INMPI.
When Gumsu turned 42, her billionaire hubby had a little party at the Pullman Douala Rabingha Hotel in Cameroon for her.
Sources close to the estranged couple said their love for each other was infectious as Bayero treated her like a princess, and sent her flowers all the time.
But all that stopped when Bayero updated his Wikipedia profile and stunned everyone as he stated in his new status that he has parted ways with Gumsu due to irreconcilable differences.

In a surprising development in April 2021, Gumsu got married to Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni.
The wedding took place at the Abuja residence of Gumsu’s brother, Mohammed Abacha. Buni, at the time, was also the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker National Chairman
She became wife number four, as the governor had earlier married three wives. Among them is Umi Adama, the daughter of his predecessor, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, whom he married in 2019, 24 hours after he took the oath of office.
However, in December 2023, Gumsu was reported to have ended her relationship with the governor following a cryptic message shared on her X (formerly Twitter) account.

Gumsu almost every year comes under media attacks whenever she tries to celebrate her late father, General Sani Abacha.
Abacha’s tenure
Abacha was a dictator who ruled as Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1993 to 1998.
In September 1994, he issued a decree that placed his government above the jurisdiction of the courts effectively giving him absolute power.
Another decree gave him the right to detain anyone for up to three months without trial. He further abrogated Decree 691 of 1993.
Abacha’s loot
The unprecedented economic achievements coincided with the rapid expansion of embezzlement hitherto unseen in the history of corruption in Nigeria in the alleged saga known as “Abacha loot”.
Abacha’s national security adviser, Alhaji Ismaila Gwarzo, was accused by the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo to have played a central role in the looting and transfer of money to overseas accounts.
Abacha’s son, Mohammed Abacha and best friend Alhaji Mohammed M. Sada were also involved.
A preliminary report published by the Abdulsalam Abubakar transitional government in November 1998 described the process.
The report mentioned that Sani Abacha told Ismaila Gwarzo to provide fake national security funding requests, which Abacha approved.
The funds were usually sent in cash or travellers’ cheques by the Central Bank of Nigeria to Gwarzo, who took them to Abacha’s house. Mohammed Sada then arranged to launder the money to offshore accounts. An estimated $1.4 billion in cash was delivered in this way.
In 2004, a list of the ten most self-enriching leaders in the previous two decades was released in order of amount allegedly stolen, the fourth-ranked of these was Abacha and his family who are alleged to have embezzled $1 billion – $5 billion.
