Gunmen kill two police officers in another attack in South-east, a highlight of the growing insecurity in Nigeria

Gunmen have carried out a deadly attack at Ahiara Junction in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria’s South-east.

According to Punch newspaper, the incident took place on Monday while the new Commissioner of Police, Danjuma Aboki, was visiting his officers in the council area. The attackers opened fire on the officers, instantly killing two of them.

Tragically, a male resident was also fatally shot by a stray bullet during the attack. Imo State’s police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and stated that a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the culprits.

In recent times, Imo State, like other states in Nigeria’s south-east, has experienced a worsening security situation, with frequent attacks targeting security agencies, government officials, and facilities.

This latest attack occurred just days after the abduction and murder of a traditional ruler in the state. The Nigerian government has accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for these attacks, although the group has consistently denied any involvement.

IPOB is a group advocating for the creation of an independent state of Biafra in the south-east and parts of south-south Nigeria.
