The region, currently embroiled in conflict with Israel and cut off from the world in terms of communication and connectivity, has found an unexpected ally in Musk and his Starlink satellite services.
Musk’s announcement over the weekend took the world by surprise as he pledged to provide internet access to the people in Gaza, where a communication blackout had plunged the area into darkness. Israeli forces had initiated a ground operation in the region after a delayed response to the ongoing conflict. The move has stirred controversy and tension, with the State of Israel expressing its displeasure over Musk’s intervention.
Shlomo Karhi, the Minister of Communications for Israel, vented his frustration on Twitter, declaring, “Israel will use all means at its disposal to fight this. HAMAS will use it for terrorist activities. There is no doubt about it, we know it, and Musk knows it. HAMAS is ISIS.”
Musk’s decision to aid Gaza was, in part, prompted by a tweet from his longstanding adversary, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who condemned the sudden darkness that had befallen Gaza overnight due to Israeli actions.
In a direct response to Ocasio-Cortez, Musk clarified, “Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza.” This statement emphasized Musk’s intention to provide access to reputable humanitarian organizations. It’s a clear acknowledgment of the complex situation in Gaza, where Hamas, deemed a terrorist organization by some, still has a significant presence.
The conflict in the region has led to a worldwide outcry for a ceasefire, accompanied by widespread pro-Palestine protests. As Israel seeks to identify those responsible for an attack on October 7, which resulted in the loss of more than 1,400 innocent lives, thousands of Palestinians have tragically lost their lives in retaliatory measures.
