Who is Balarabe Abbas Musa?

Balarabe Abbas Lawal is a Nigerian politician who was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Minister to replace Mallam Nasir el-Rufai as ministerial nominee from Kaduna state.

El-Rufai was earlier nominated by the President but had his nomination turned down by the Senate after the screening exercise in August. 

Biography

Balarabe Abbas, is a former Secretary to the Government of Kaduna State.

Balarabe Abbas Musa, simply referred to as Balarabe Abbas and by some as Balarabe Musa, should not be confused with Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa, a former governor of Kaduna state who died in November 2022 at 85.

Abbas Lawal Balarabe was born on February 5, 1958. He is currently 65 years old as at February 5, 2023.

Education

After his secondary school education, Balarabe Abbas gained admission to study Political Science at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1978. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) degree in Political Science in 1981.

He enrolled in a Master’s degree program in the same school in 1984 and in 1986 obtained an M.Sc in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Career

Non-political

Balarabe is into real estate and property management. He currently serves as the Managing Director of Rightedge Property Nigeria Limited, Abuja, a position he has occupied since October 2008.

Balarabe is active in agricultural activities like poultry, livestock, and crop production in Zaria Metropolis.

Political

Balarabe worked as a Special Assistant to the Federal Minister of Education in Abuja between September 1999 and February 2001.

He also worked as a Special Assistant to the Minister of State (Army) at the Ministry of Defence between February 2001 and May 2003.

Balarabe then worked as a Special Assistant to the President in the Federal Capital Territory and as the Chief of Staff to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, among other positions held, from July 2003 until July 2007.

He headed the transition committee of the state in 2015 and served as the committee’s vice-chairman in 2019.

Between 2015 and 2023, Balarabe served as Secretary to the State Government of Kaduna under Nasir El-Rufai’s administration.

He chaired a 65-man transition committee ahead of the swearing-in of Senator Uba Sani, as governor of Kaduna State on May 29. 

Net worth

It is impossible to predict Balarabe Abbas Lawal’s net worth accurately. But as a Nigerian politician, he is expected to do well for himself, better than a typical civil servant.

Controversy

Balarabe, who President Bola Tinubu selected to replace the former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, suddenly slumped in the Senate Chamber during his October 4, 2023 screening.

After Balarabe concluded his presentation before the lawmakers, he suddenly collapsed as one of the Kaduna senators was commending his efforts. 

Following Balarabe’s collapse, Senate President GodsWill Akpabio raised his voice, urgently ordering, “Retrieve water and sugar! Dial Dr. Musa.” 

Immediately afterwards, Akpabio convened a closed-door session.
