Brief history of the FIRS
In 1943 the Nigerian Inland Revenue Department was carved out of the Inland Revenue Department of British West Africa and renamed the Federal Board of Inland Revenue under the Income Tax Ordinance No.39 of 1958.
The Income Tax Management Act of 1961 created the Joint Tax Board (JTB) and charged it, primarily to ensure uniformity of standards and application of Personal Income Tax in Nigeria.
What is TIN?
Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique number issued by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) to individuals, registered businesses, and incorporated companies in Nigeria for the purpose of tax payment.
Until recently, to get a TIN, applicants had to visit the nearest FIRS office in their area to get a TIN, but now, it is possible to apply online and have it sent to your email address within 24 hours. Here is how:
1. Visit the Joint Tax Board (JTB) official website
2. Select the option that applies to you: Individual or Non-Individual
3. Follow the screen prompts and direction to complete your registration
4. Expect a TIN Request Creation Notice email
Check your email for a message from [email protected] with the subject TIN Request Creation Notice.
5. TIN Certificate
The TIN Certificate mail that will be sent to your email will contain the TIN and a link to download the certificate.
