In a decisive move, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has issued a directive to ban the operation of commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as okada, within the bustling metropolises of Umuahia and Aba.

This directive, effective immediately, aims to address safety concerns and enhance the overall urban environment.

According to a statement by Kazie Uko, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Otti, the ban comes into effect on Monday, August 14, 2023. The statement reads, ‘The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has directed the immediate ban on the operation of commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as Okada, within Umuahia, the State capital, and Aba Metropolis.’

The directive further outlines that any motorcycle found being used for commercial purposes on the streets of Umuahia and Aba will be impounded by security agencies. Additionally, strict measures have been put in place to enforce this ban, with security agencies authorized to arrest and possibly prosecute any individuals caught violating the order.

Governor Otti’s move underscores his commitment to enhancing the safety and well-being of residents in these urban centers, while also addressing the challenges posed by unregulated okada operations. The immediate implementation of this ban reflects the state government’s dedication to ensuring a secure and orderly environment for its citizens.”
