Edo State is gearing up for a transformative endeavor that aims to alleviate the burden of the recent petroleum subsidy removal on the most vulnerable members of its population. In a groundbreaking move, the state government has announced a robust palliative initiative, set to launch in September, which will provide monthly financial support of N20,000 to impoverished households.

Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, unveiled this significant development in a press briefing following a pivotal state Executive Council meeting held in Benin. Nehikhare revealed that the substantial funding for this initiative, a total of N500 million, was pledged by Governor in response to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protest.

Derived from the state’s Internal Generated Revenue (IGR), this fund is a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the most marginalized members of society. The beneficiaries, carefully selected from a revalidated and updated database of the poorest households in the state, will experience direct financial relief.

The process of revalidating this database is already underway. The state is enhancing its accuracy by incorporating additional identifiers such as the Edo State Residency Cards and the National Identity Number (NIN). The original database, compiled between 2019 and 2021, is being meticulously reviewed and enhanced to ensure that every deserving household is included.

Nehikhare elaborated, “Once this review and revalidation is complete, a monthly disbursement of N20,000 will commence for over 314,000 households, benefiting approximately one million individuals encompassed in the database.” A crucial distinction emphasized by Nehikhare is that this financial allocation is derived entirely from Edo State’s IGR, rather than from federal funds.

In tandem with this remarkable welfare initiative, Edo State is also amplifying its commitment to security. A visionary plan to fortify the state’s security framework is underway, involving the training of about 1,500 volunteers who will bolster the ranks of the state’s vigilante group. The objective is ambitious yet clear: to enhance security and establish Edo as the paragon of safety within Nigeria.

As the calendar turns to September, the launch of Edo State’s palliative program promises to reshape the lives of vulnerable households, casting a beacon of hope and assistance during challenging times. This ambitious endeavor underscores the state’s dedication to the welfare and prosperity of its citizens, setting an inspiring precedent for comprehensive social and economic transformation.
