Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed concern about the increasing presence of hoodlums in the National Assembly complex, causing harassment and theft of lawmakers’ valuables. He emphasized that the lawmakers now feel threatened by these uninvited guests, who have been invading the federal parliament, loitering aimlessly in both the Senate and House of Representatives wings. The situation has become a nuisance as these hoodlums harass lawmakers and staff of the National Assembly.

Akpabio shared his concerns during a meeting with members of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) who paid a courtesy call on him at the NASS complex in Abuja. The Chairman of the NASC, Ahmed Kadi Amshi, also highlighted the challenges faced by the Commission.

In light of these security issues, Akpabio stressed the need for a cleaner and more secure environment within the complex. He mentioned that several Senators have lost their telephones due to the influx of unauthorized individuals into the premises.

Despite the ongoing general renovation work and fresh projects at the National Assembly, the Senate President revealed that President Bola Tinubu is expected to inaugurate the completed projects, which amount to N30 billion, in December. These projects include a permanent office complex for the National Assembly Service Commission and a well-equipped Library Complex.

As the 10th National Assembly settles down for legislative activities, addressing the issue of security and maintaining a safe and orderly environment within the complex becomes a priority to ensure the smooth functioning of parliamentary proceedings.
