Peter Obi Reveals the Key to Strengthening the Nigerian Passport

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, has proposed a solution to bolster the Nigerian passport’s reputation and global standing.

During a Twitter space session organized by Parallel Facts, a Nigerian news network, Obi asserted that the key to earning respect for the Nigerian passport lies in offering something of value to the world. He emphasized that a nation cannot earn respect if it is perceived as economically weak and dependent on others. Therefore, the crucial first step is to build a strong and stable economy within the country.

In 2023, the Nigerian passport ranks among the bottom 20, providing visa-free access to only 46 countries according to the Henley Passport Index, which evaluates the number of visa-free destinations for passport holders. Obi stressed the importance of having a robust foreign policy, which he believes is interconnected with a strong domestic policy. He pointed to influential international groupings like the G7 and G20, formed based on economic strength, and expressed disappointment that Nigeria is not yet a member of such prestigious forums.

In a personal revelation, Obi shared that despite having opportunities to obtain dual citizenship and residency in other countries, he has chosen to remain solely a Nigerian citizen. He strongly criticized Nigeria’s leaders, including politicians like himself, for collectively failing the nation by not fostering a better society for future generations.

Calling for transformative change, Obi emphasized that the Nigerian passport can only gain global respect when the country achieves progress and development. He urged everyone to take responsibility and work towards building a better Nigeria, underlining that respect is earned through responsible and proper actions.
