Nigerian states that will be getting new governors in 2023

The March 18, 2023 gubernatorial elections were conducted in more than 15 states of the 36 states of the federation.

Surprisingly, unlike most election years, Nigeria has experienced so far. In a surprising turn of events, Labour Party (LP), a political party which is less competitive years before the election won a governorship seat.

The Zamafara state governor, Bello Mattawale lost his re-election bid to PDP’s Dauda Lawal.

That being noted, here is a list of Nigerian states that will be getting new governors come May 29, 2023.

1. Abia state

Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP) is the winner of the governorship election in Abia state.

Otti scored 175,467, Ahiwe of the PDP polled 88,529 while Nwafor of the YPP got 28,972.

The LP candidate also won 10 of the 17 local government areas in the state, PDP got six while the YPP got one.

2. Akwa Ibom

Umo Eno of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the gubernatorial election in Akwa Ibom state.

Eno won in 29 of the 31 local government areas in the state with a total of 354,348 votes to defeat his top challenger, Bassey Albert of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), who won in two local governments areas, scoring 136,262 votes.

3. Benue

Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia won the 2023 governorship election in Benue state.

Alia, a Roman Catholic priest, has garnered 194,555 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Titus Uba, are trailing with 99,860 votes.

The margin of lead is 94,695 votes.

4. Cross River

Bassey Otu won the 2023 gubernatorial election in Cross River state.

5. Delta

Sheriff Oborevwori won the 2023 gubernatorial election in Delta state.

Oborevwori polled 360, 234 votes to beat his closest rival of the APC, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who scored 240,229.

The Labour Party candidate, Ken Pela, polled 48,047 votes.

6. Ebonyi

Francis Nwifuru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the 2023 Ebonyi state governorship election.

Nwifuru garnered a total of 199,131 votes cast across the 13 local governments in the state.

His closest challenger, Ifeanyi Odii of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), got a total of 80,191 votes to place second.

The candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Bernard Odoh, came third with 52,189 votes.

7. Enugu

Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared winner of the Enugu governorship election by INEC.

Mbah polled 160,895 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, who scored 157,552 votes.

The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Frank Nweke Jr, garnered 17,983 votes to come a distant third, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Uche Nnaji, placed fourth, with 14,575 votes.

8. Jigawa

INEC declared Malam Umar Namadi Dammodi of the APC as the winner of the gubernatorial election in Jigawa.

9. Kaduna – Uba Sani (APC)

10. Kano state – Abba Yusuf (NNPP)

11. Katsina -Dikko Radda (APC)

12. Niger – Umar Bago (APC)

13. Plateau – Barr Caleb Mutfwang (PDP)

14. Rivers state – Sim Fubara (PDP)

15. Sokoto – Aliyu Ahmed (APC)

16. Taraba – Kefas Agbu (PDP)

17. Zamfara -Dauda Lawal (PDP)
