Abba Kabir-Yusuf is the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) in Kano state, and he is the most favoured candidate to win the election according to a poll commissioned by Anap Foundation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled March 11, 2023 for the governorship elections.

Abba Kabir Yusuf also known as Abba is a Nigerian politician from the Sullubawa part of Genawa Clan of the Fulani.

On the maternal side he is related to Walin Zazzau Sheikh Umarul Wali ibn Galadiman Zazzau Malam Ahmadu, his paternal grandmother Zainab ibna Malam Saidu Limamin Huggalawa is from the family of Limamin Huggalawa in Bichi, his maternal grandmother Khadijat Naja’atu is related to Gwani Mukhtar who was the leader of the Fulani Jihad in the Kanem-Bornu Empire.

He was born in Gaya local government area of Kano State, Nigeria.

Abba was born on January 5, 1963. Deducing from his date of birth, he is 60 years old in 2023.

Family

Abba Kabir-Yusuf is a son-in-law to the popular Northern politician and the 2023 presidential candidate of the NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Education

Abba went to Sumaila primary school and later to Government Secondary school Lautai, Gumel Local Government Area (now Jigawa State), where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1980.

Later on, he got admitted into Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, where he obtained his national diploma in civil engineering in 1985.

Abba would later obtained a higher national diploma in civil engineering, and certificate and specialization on water resources/environmental engineering in 1989 from Kaduna Polytechnic.

He did his National Youth Service Corps at Kaduna Environmental Protection Agency from 1989 to 1990.

He is also a holder of a postgraduate diploma in management, and obtained a master’s degree in business administration from Bayero University Kano (BUK).

Career

Abba served in the Executive Council of Kano State from 2011 to 2015 as Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport.

He contested the 2019 election for Governor of Kano State under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) but was defeated by the Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Controversy

Crowd-fund allegation

In September 2022, Abba was rumoured to have been requesting one thousand naira (N1,000) donation from members of the general public to fund his campaign.

He denied the rumour in a statement made available to the mediaby his aide, Sanusi Bature,

He claimed the “misinformation” is an attempt to tarnish the reputation of his principal.

The statement reads; “We wish to inform the good people of Kano State, particularly members of our great party, the NNPP to disregard the content of the video as a mere campaign of calumny orchestrated by some ill-behaved individuals within the opposition political circle, Mr Bature said.

“It is worthy to note that his Excellency is aware of the existence of FRIENDS OF ABBA GIDA GIDA as a group of his associates from various Nigerian universities, other higher institutions, legal professionals and those from the business community who organized themselves with the sole aim of promoting good governance and democracy in which they found in him (Abba Gida Gida) a worthy ambassador.

“Thus, by this press statement, His Excellency wishes to make it categorically clear that he has never initiated any fundraising for his 2023 campaign activities which are yet to pick up.

“We remained resolute and committed to salvaging Kano state from the unfortunate situation in which the people of the state found themselves under the present incompetent leadership,” the statement said.

Sales of public property in Kano

Abba in 2020 accused Governor Abdullah Umar Ganduje of violating rule of law and due process on alleged sales of public property.

He petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria, (CJN) and Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC), requesting their urgent intervention on what he considered an abuse of power and breach of rules of law by Ganduje.
