The party, which was reputed to be one of the leading political parties in Northern Nigeria was founded in Kano State, on 8th August, 1950.

It later emerged as major opposition with a strong alliance with the Zikist National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons as well as the popular Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) which was known to have federal might.

Alhassan’s father later joined the United Progressive Grand Alliance (UPGA) but subsequently became a member of the Kano State Assembly under the platform of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

“I went to get her some drugs but before I came from the pharmacy, she was dead”.

He returned to the Federal House in 2007 to represent Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency. He was re-elected in 2011 and 2015. He is a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Teacup attack

The deputy governorship candidate of the APC, Murtala Garo, in November 2022 alleged that Alhassan Doguwa attacked him with a teacup during a meeting.

Speaking with BBC Hausa, Garo said; “When he invaded the meeting, he started disagreeing that he was not involved in the meeting because it was a time of sharing money but when it comes to the difficult task of the party he will be invited,” Mr Garo said.

“But the deputy governor replied that they are not sharing money because nobody gives them money to share, he then asked why he was not invited despite his position as the majority leader, and that is how the argument turned into a quarrel.

“Mr Doguwa accused me of destroying his banners which I denied; he grabbed a teacup in front of the deputy governor and threw it at me”.

‘Vote for APC or you are dealt with’

Alhassan Doguwa was heard in a viral video, in December 2022, inciting party supporters to deal with anyone who would not be voting for the APC.

“To God who made me, on election day, you must vote for APC or we deal with you.

“I’m saying it again: on election day you either vote for APC, or we deal with you.

“Repeat after me, in Doguwa you either vote for APC or we deal with you,” he said amidst a chorus of applause from the audience.

During an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday, Doguwa stated that his intention was to motivate rather than intimidate supporters.

N70 million need for election

Doguwa in a viral video reacting to the naira scarcity lamented that he will need N70 million in cash for the February 25, 2023 polls.

Speaking during an interview, he also stated; “And don’t forget the point I made as a partisan member that the policy in itself is against the ruling party because Nigerians that are not happy will look at it as a policy of the government of the APC. 30-40 days to elections you come out with a policy that is not widely accepted by Nigerians and whether we like it or not that will be seen as the program of the government. So those of us in the APC are not happy about it”.

Alleged assault of a journalist

Hon Doguwa was sued by Abdullahi Yakubu, a correspondent of the Leadership Newspaper for allegedly assaulting him when he attended a press conference at the lawmaker’s residence.

Apologising to the journalist, Doguwa said he has known him (Yakubu) for more than 30 years and “I am very sorry over the issue”.

Speaking, he said; “It was never intentional because even Abdullahi Yakubu knows the kind of person I am.

“Honestly, if there has been any journalist that seriously promoted my activities so far, it is Yakubu.

“Even in some instances, we write the story together, where I correct him in some of the writeups and we would be happy over the whole scenario.

“Also, in some cases I come up with writeups, he would correct me, saying professionally, ‘this is wrong in journalism.’

“Just like I said earlier, I have known Abdullahi for over 30 years, so with this, I have publicly apologised to him because it was the word assault in the case against me that left me in jittery. Because I am aware of human rights and that of a journalist.’’

“This is because journalists are like soldiers and police, their job is a front-line job. I have a lot of respect for them,” he said.
