Top oil-producing countries in Africa (January 2023)

Crude oil, as a natural resource, is the main source of foreign exchange for some African countries.

Its production and sales could have a major effect on these countries’ GDP and overall economic growth, as in Nigeria.

Based on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) monthly report for February, African countries in aggregate performed better in oil production for January than their output for December in 2022.

Below are the best-performing African countries based on output compared to December.

1. Angola – 1.155 mbpd

Angola is a Southern African nation whose varied terrain encompasses tropical Atlantic beaches, a labyrinthine system of rivers and Sub-Saharan desert that extends across the border into Namibia.

In December 2022, the total oil production by Angola was 1.108 million barrels per day (mbpd) but this increased to 1.155mbpd in January 2023.

2. Libya – 1.159 mbpd

Libya, officially the State of Libya, is a country in the Maghreb region in North Africa. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad to the south, Niger to the southwest, Algeria to the west, and Tunisia to the northwest.

In December 2022, the total oil production by Libya was 1.148 million barrels per day (mbpd) but this increased to 1.159 mbpd in January 2023.

3. Nigeria – 1.336 mbpd

Nigeria, is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, and has many natural landmarks and wildlife reserves. It is the most populous black nation in the world and also the most populous country in Africa.

In December 2022, the total oil production by Nigeria was 1.336 million barrels per day (mbpd) but increased to 1.271 mbpd in January 2023.

4. Algeria – 1.015 mbpd

Algeria is a North African country with a Mediterranean coastline and a Saharan desert interior. Many empires have left legacies here, such as the ancient Roman ruins in seaside Tipaza.

In December 2022, the total oil production by Algeria was 1.015 million barrels per day (mbpd) but increased to 1.015 mbpd in January 2023.

5. Congo – 0.244 mbpd

In December 2022, the total oil production by Congo was 0.262 million barrels per day (mbpd) but reduced to 0.244 mbpd in January 2023.

6. Gabon – 0.193 mbpd

Gabon is a country on the west coast of Central Africa with significant areas of protected parkland.

In December 2022, the total oil production by Gabon was 0.183 million barrels per day (mbpd) but increased to 0.193 mbpd in January 2023.

7. Equatorial Guinea – 0.055 mbpd

Equatorial Guinea is a Central African country comprising the Rio Muni mainland and 5 volcanic offshore islands.

In December 2022, the total oil production by Equatorial Guinea was 0.053 million barrels per day (mbpd) but increased to 0.055 mbpd in January 2023.
