Things You Need to Know About eSIM

By Balogun Kamilu Lekan

Three(Airtel, MTN and 9Mobile) of the four telecommunication giants in Nigeria have announced that they now offer the eSIM service.

This has caused curiosity among service users about what eSIM means and what they will gain from it.

Below is all you need to know about the eSIM

What is an eSIM?

eSIM is an embedded SIM. As the name implies, it is a sim card incorporated into the phone’s circuit board. It’s rewritable and works with all major carriers.

E-SIMs (Embedded SIMs) are the next evolution of Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM cards). Their flexibility and freedom are unparalleled. In contrast to a physical SIM, an eSIM is already embedded in your phone, device, or wearable. You don’t need to insert it into your phone.

To use all the services you typically get from a traditional SIM, you activate the eSIM by creating an account profile.

In summary, an eSIM

  • functions exactly like a SIM card
  • is a highly secure software built into the phone.

What are the advantages of an eSIM?

The chance of losing or destroying it is decreased Because your SIM is integrated into your device,

You no longer need to cope with SIM card cutting or adapter searching.

On a single device, an eSIM enables the use of numerous mobile numbers, both physical and eSIM. By doing this, carrying around multiple devices becomes less of a problem.

It puts an end to the frequent SIM card damage or loss complaints.

The eSIM is ideal for frequent travellers because it makes switching network operators seamless.

The SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) credentials required to connect to the cellphone network of your desired carrier are downloaded.

How do you activate an eSIM?

You must own an eSIM-compatible phone to activate an eSIM. The compatible devices are

  • Apple iPhone XS and newer models
  • Samsung Galaxy S-series from S20
  • Samsung Galaxy Note series from Note20
  • Google Pixel 2 and more recent models
  • Samsung Galaxy Z and Galaxy Fold devices
