Biography

Bolaji Balogun is the Chief Executive Officer of Chapel Hill Denham and Chief Investment Officer of the Nigeria Infrastructure Debt Fund

He has been one of the leading deal-makers in Nigeria over the last decade. Bolaji is the son of one of Nigeria’s notable bankers and the founder of First City Monument Bank(FCMB) – Olasubomi Balogun.

Education

Bolaji Balogun attended Igbobi College, Lagos and Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, for his secondary education before heading to the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, for his degrees.

Career

Bolaji began his career with the First City Group in investment banking and securities trading. He began his career in the early 1990s as Executive Director/Chief Operating Officer of CSL Stockbrokers Limited in Lagos, Nigeria, where he remained until 2001. He was appointed Executive Director of FCMB Capital Markets, which was still part of the Group, in January 1996.

In 2001, he left the FCMB Group to pursue a career in the mobile communication industry. In some ways, this move reflected his desire to make his luck.

After leaving FCMB, he became a co-founder and Director of Econet Wireless Nigeria, now Airtel Nigeria. He oversaw the USD285 million GSM license capitalization and license bid auction process for Econet Wireless Nigeria.

He was Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer and was appointed Chief Marketing Officer in October 2001. Econet Wireless’ USD1.67 billion sale to Celtel in 2005 remains Nigeria’s single largest successfully exited private investment. When Bolaji founded Chapel Hill in 2005, he left mobile communications and returned to investment banking.

When Bolaji Balogun returned to investment banking in 2005, he decided to go it alone, much like his father did when he founded City Securities Limited almost 30 years before. Chapel Hill Denham is an investment banking firm he founded. Bolaji now serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Chapel Hill Denham Group and the Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of Chapel Hill Advisory Partners Limited.

The group specializes in investment banking, asset management, and securities trading, and it is also Nigeria’s leading alternative asset manager. Chapel Hill Denham is also interested in Africa and Nigeria’s economic development, focusing on infrastructure, energy and renewables, real estate, SMEs, financial inclusion, healthcare, and education.

Bolaji is married to Kemi, and they have five children:

He was previously the Chairman of Nahco FTZ Limited and a Director of Nahco Avaince Plc and NASD Plc. From May 2015 to June 2020, he served as Board Chairman of Lafarge Africa Plc, and from March 2005 to May 2015, he served as a Director on the board of Lafarge Wapco Nigeria Plc.

Balogun was appointed to the Africa Advisory Board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in September 2009.
