Timeline of notable events in Nigeria – 2022

As we beckon to 2023, here is a timeline of notable events in Nigeria in 2022:

January

Oba Adetunji Aje Oguniso, the 93-year-old Olubadan of Ibadan, passed away on January 1.

Bashir Tofa, a former candidate for president of the National Republican Convention (NRC), passed away on January 3 at the age of 74 in the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Adebayo Alao-Akala, the former governor of Oyo State, passed away on January 12 in Ogbomosho at the age of 71.

February 

Rochas Okorocha was accused on February 1 by the EFCC of stealing N2.9 billion in total across 17 counts.

On February 10, the FG granted citizenship to 286 foreign nationals.

ASUU began an indefinite strike on February 14.

On February 16, Buhari asked the NASS for an extra N2.556 trillion to pay for fuel subsidies.

On February 26, President Muhammadu Buhari officially signed the Electoral Act 2022 into law.

February 27: INEC shifted the date of the 2023 national legislative and presidential elections to February 25.

March

On March 9, a Federal High Court dismissed the governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, his deputy, Dr. Erick Igwe, and 16 lawmakers for defecting from the PDP to the APC.

On March 10, the APC officially announced that the North-Central geopolitical zone would hold the role of national chairman. This verified the zoning agreement that President Buhari had previously endorsed.

On March 18, as Professor Charles Soludo took over as the new governor of Anambra State, the EFCC detained Chief Willie Obiano, the departing governor of that state.

On March 20, an unknown assailant detonated a bomb in the Awo – Omamma residence of Professor George Obiozor, president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide.

On March 28, suspected terrorists ambushed a passenger train carrying more than 970 passengers in Kaduna State. A number of persons were killed, while the other passengers were taken hostage.

April 

The railway surveillance contract was approved by President Buhari on April 8.

Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation, announced on April 10 that he would run for president in 2023.

Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president, announced his desire to run for president in 2023 on April 11.

Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, Alaafin of Oyo, passed away on April 23.

On April 24, a fire explosion at an illicit refinery in a border town between the states of Imo and River claimed at least 100 lives.

Alabo Graham-Douglas, a four-time federal minister, was reported deceased on April 26.

On April 26, Nnamdi Kanu refused the Federal High Court’s customary directive that he be tried in secrecy.

May 

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, was endorsed for reelection by Bola Tinubu on May 5.

Sen. Arthur Nzeribe, a controversial figure in politics, passed away on May 9.

The Senate revised the 2022 Electoral Act on May 11 to permit statutory delegates to take part in the election.

On May 12, the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) opened up voting for the presidential ticket.

June

On June 8, Bola Tinubu received 1,271 votes to secure the APC’s presidential nomination.

On June 11, a judge in Ondo State condemned three of the four suspects in the death by hanging of Pa Reuben Fasoranti’s 58-year-old daughter.

On June 17, Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa announced his candidacy to succeed Atiku Abubakar as the PDP’s presidential candidate.

On June 19, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, an APC candidate, won the election for governor of Ekiti State.

On August 10, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, announced the capture of the terrorists responsible for the attack on the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo.

Chief Duro Onabule, a former spokesperson for former military leader Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, passed away on August 18 at the age of 83.

September 

On September 21, INEC approved the candidacies of Atiku, Obi, Tinubu, and 15 other candidates.

In protest of the ASUU strike, the National Association of Nigerian Students, or NANS, suspended operations at the Murtala Muhammad Airport in Ikeja on September 26.

Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto State, became leader of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum on September 28.

A peace agreement for the general elections in 2023 was reached on September 29 by political parties and their presidential candidates.

October 

On October 1, when Nigeria celebrated 62 years of independence, Peter Obi’s supporters conducted simultaneous demonstrations in numerous states to rally support for him.

On October 10, Atiku flagged off his campaign in Uyo.

On October 11, President Buhari presented 447 people with national honours in Abuja.

On October 14, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s 15-count terrorism indictment and granted his release.

ASUU terminated its eight-month strike on October 14.

On October 21, the Supreme Court confirmed Sheriff Oborevwori, the speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, as the PDP candidate for governor of Delta State in 2023.

On October 21, UNESCO estimated that 20 million Nigerian children were not enrolled in school.

November 

On November 23, Nnamdi Kanu filed a lawsuit against Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation, seeking N20 billion due to an unusual rendition from Kenya.

On November 29, the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police, to three months in prison for defying the court’s order.

Osun State’s new governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP, took office on November 27.

December 

December 7: The Central Bank of Nigeria has capped weekly cash withdrawals for individuals at N100,000.

December 22: The CBN increased the weekly cash withdrawal restrictions for both individuals and businesses to N500,000 for individuals and N5,000,000 for businesses.

The National Assembly passes the 2022 supplemental budget and the 2023 budget on December 28.
