Asa, real name – Bukola Elemide, is a Nigerian-French singer, songwriter, and recording artist with a smoky voice. 

She was born on the 17th of September 1982 in Paris, France.

Asa mixes soul, pop, folk, and reggae elements, among other international influences, into her warm neo-soul songs.

Asa first attended Corona High School in Lagos and then Federal Government College, Jos, Plateau State, for her secondary education.

Later, she briefly attended the Lagos State University (LASU) as a Theatre Arts and Music diploma student before dropping out. While a diploma student, Asa took Saxophone lessons at Peter King’s Musical School in Badagry, Lagos, where she majored in Guitar for a year.

Afterwards, Asa moved to France to study at the IMFP School of Jazz.

Asa began her musical career after moving from Nigeria to France. Aa met Janet Nwose, her manager and friend, in 2004. Through their introduction, Nwose connected Asa with Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, who later served as her debut album’s producer (Asha).

At 20, Asa moved back to France to enrol in the IMFP jazz music school. The instructors advised her to pursue her dream of becoming a recording artist without further education because they felt she was ready. Her debut single, “Eyé Adaba,” was starting to gain airplay in her native Nigeria. Soon after, Aa signed with Nave Records.

She collaborated with Cobhams Asuquo, and with the addition of Christopher Dupouy and Benjamin Constant, to produce “Asa”, her debut self-titled album, which went platinum. The album entered the radio charts after the album’s release in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 2008, a jury of 19 music industry experts in Paris selected Asa as the best new talent out of 10 singers or groups, and she went on to win the prestigious French Constantin Award.

With French composer Nicolas Mollard, she worked on her second album, Beautiful Imperfection, which was released on October 25, 2010, and achieved platinum status in 2011. Be My Man, the album’s lead single, was made available to the public in late September 2010. Aa reportedly sold 400,000 albums globally by the year 2014.

Bed of Stone, Asa’s third studio album, was released in 2014. “Dead Again,” “Eyo,” “Satan Be Gone,” “The One That Never Comes,” and “Moving On” are top singles from it. Between 2015 and 2017, she undertook a global tour.

She released two new singles in 2019: “The Beginning” and “Good Thing”.

On October 11, 2019, she declared on her Twitter page that Lucid, her new album, would be released. The album was released on October 11, 2019, as she had promised.

On February 25, 2022, she released her fifth album, “V,” which featured artists like Wizkid, The Cavemen, a Nigerian highlife duo, and Ghanaian singer Amaarae.

Asa reportedly slammed a 700 million naira lawsuit on a Lagos-based celebrity magazine, News of the People, for libel against her.

The magazine published a story claiming that Asa was involved in a lesbianism act with her manager, Janet Nwose

In their lawsuit, the soul singer and her manager asked the court to rule that the accusations of lesbianism against them were untrue, unlawful, and a violation of their legal rights.
