Career

Tunez began performing at Christmas events at his neighbourhood church as a teenager. This quickly progressed to paid gigs DJing church members’ events, such as weddings and birthday parties.

The African community in South Brooklyn took notice of his ability to perform music with afrobeat and dancehall-inspired ambience to an audience, and the modest amount of attention prompted him to organise parties throughout the city.

In 2007, Tunez formally debuted as a DJ in the US. After fusing African classics with teen hits like “Chicken Noodle Soup” for two years, churchgoers started hiring him for extracurricular events like Sweet 16 and 60th birthday parties.

His first exposure to the world of music outside of Nigeria came from Caribbean DJs in New York. Hip hop hadn’t yet embraced afrobeat, but dancehall songs were beginning to incorporate afrobeat, as in Flavour’s “Nwa Baby,” which combines Highlife melodies with the beats of the enduring “Bam Bam” riddim. The soca-influenced song “Bum Bum” by Nigerian musician Timaya became a worldwide hit in 2012.
