Biography

Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke (born) is a former director general of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the first female stockbroker in Nigeria.

She was born in Bonny, Rivers State, on 2 November 1950. Ndi Okereke is 72 years as of 2022

The Professional Excellence Foundation of Nigeria (PEFON) honoured Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke and other individuals for their excellence and moral leadership in their fields.

Education

Ndi Okereke had her secondary education at Queen’s School, Enugu, Nigeria, before obtaining her MBA in Finance and Computer Science from the City University of New York, USA. 

Although Okereke-Onyiuke claimed that she earned a Doctor of Philosophy and a Doctor of Administration in Finance and Securities Market from the Graduate School of the same university, there is no record according to the university she attended the programme and was awarded the said degrees.

Career

In January 1983, Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke began working for the Nigerian Stock Exchange as the manager and head of the research and information services department.

She rose through the ranks to become the Nigerian Stock Exchange’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer (NSE). One of the notable Nigerian women who has held significant administrative and political positions is Ndi Okereke Onyiuke. She is the first woman to ever serve as NSE’s director.

One of the best things to have ever happened to the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) was Okereke-Onyiuke, and she made enormous and colossal contributions to the growth of the exchange and the capital market.

She improved the Exchange’s research foundation two years after starting her position as Director General. One was her impact on the exchange’s computerisation, which resulted in developing The Nigerian Stock Exchange All Shares Index. She also started the Stock Exchange Authorised Clerkship Examination during this time, which was a significant step in training future stockbrokers.

Controversy

Okereke’s educational background is shrouded in enormous controversy as her bachelor’s and doctorate degree was reportedly fake, and there was no record of her attaining them.

Her records could not be verified in the databases of the U.S. Department of Education and the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges, according to an online source, so no information was discovered for the undergraduate institution she claimed to have attended.

According to the same report, a query was made to the Graduate School of the City University of New York inquiring whether Okereke-Onyiuke had received a PhD in business from the institution. This claim was also confirmed to be fake
