The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a lecture-free day and will embark on rallies in protest against the payment of half salary.

This was disclosed by Moyosore Ajao, chairman of ASUU at the University of Ilorin.

NewsWireNGR reports Femi Falana (SAN), the legal counsel of the Union had warned the federal government not to provoke his client over wages dispute.

According to him, the lecturers should be paid their full salaries for the months they were on strike.

Meanwhile, the speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, said that the federal government is not obligated to pay members of ASUU for the time they spent on strike.

He noted that the payment of half salaries by the FG premised on the government’s legitimate interest in preventing moral hazard and discouraging disruptive industrial actions.

Gbajabiamila stated that the position taken by the executive that it is not obligated to pay salaries to lecturers for the time spent on strike is premised on the law.
