Most Iconic African Countries World Cup Kits Of All Times

By Balogun Kamilu Lekan

Africa has always been a country of focus in the FIFA World cup. The continental performance at the competition can not be over-emphasised. Aside from these performances, African countries have graced the competition with iconic football kits.

Below is a list of some of the most incredible kits used by African nations at the World Cup

10. South Africa 1998 Home Kit

This colourful kit was designed by Kappa for the Bafana Bafana to rock at the 1998 competition.

This Bafana design wasn’t as timeless as the team’s efforts earlier in the decade, most notably when they won the Nations Cup in 1996; it was a successful re-imagined upgrade on that design.

9. Nigeria 1998 Home Kit

Nigeria’s ’98 design may get lost in the swirl when all-time classic Super Eagles shirts are remembered, but it deserves more attention.

It was a classic Nike design, with a white collar and black and white trim down the flanks and the shoulders, eschewing some of the traditional iconography and influences of previous and future kits.

Taribo West, Jay-Jay Okoch, and Sunday Oliseh are top stars who dazzled the competition with this iconic kit.

8. Ghana 2010 Away Kit

Ghana’s away kit in 2010 was the finest of numerous imaginative Puma efforts from that tournament…the first on African soil…and is one of several kits on this list associated with a great showing at the World Cup.

The red and yellow combination was a nod to some of the famous Ghana reverse jerseys of the past, and it made the Black Stars appear even more intimidating than expected.

7. Nigeria 1994 Home Kit

This was the first of two Adidas Nigeria designs from the 1994 World Cup, and it was a one-of-a-kind and spectacular design that signalled the Super Eagles’ entry on the global arena.

6. Algeria 1982 Away Kit

Algeria’s 1982 campaign was overshadowed by the collaboration of West Germany and Austria, who worked together to achieve a mutually beneficial conclusion that removed the North Africans.

On the other hand, Algeria did themselves proud with some outstanding performances while possibly being the best-dressed squad in Spain.

5. Cameroon 1990 Home Kit

Green tees, red shorts, yellow socks… Cameroon’s 1990 designs were modest, but they were everlasting classics, not least because of the nation’s achievements while wearing these legendary Adidas designs.

Cameroon’s iconic style was modernised by white Adidas stripes on the shoulders, while the roaring lion over the players’ hearts made these Lions truly Indomitable.

4. Cameroon 2002 Kit

Cameroon and Puma created an outstanding uniform in the pantheon of iconic football shirts with their 2002 edition.

Of course, going with a vest design was bound to ruffle a few feathers, but even when that method was rejected by the authorities, the makers still adapted in style.

Wearing black t-shirts underneath meant the original concept was mostly preserved, and the white away uniform was also a strong design.

This was followed by the controversial one-piece design for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004.

3. Nigeria 1994 Away Kit

This unusual patterned design, the second of two Nigeria designs from the 1994 World Cup, would go on to serve as the inspiration for Nigeria’s renowned 2018 jersey.

Rashidi Yekini, wearing this design, holding the goal net in joy after scoring against Bulgaria is one of the most memorable images in African football history.

2. Zaire 1974 Home Kit

In contrast to Zaire’s dismal and ill-fated World Cup campaign in 1974, which included a 9-0 thrashing by Yugoslavia, their jerseys have remained the standard against which all future African kits have been assessed.

The Congo’s design was a timeless classic, with the bright yellow Adidas sleeves and the roaring leopard’s face on the front declaring Sub-Saharan Africa’s debut on the world scene.

1. Nigeria 2018 Home Kit

Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup uniform was an instant classic and marks one of the most spectacular outfits ever seen at the Mondial, thanks to a record-breaking design from Nike.

With three million pre-orders, this kit was famous even before it was worn, and it proved to be a genuine masterpiece with a nostalgic style that respected African tradition while simultaneously appearing futuristic.

A compelling design that could have easily won this ranking.
