Ike Ekweremadu is a Nigerian politician, public speaker, federalist, lawyer, philanthropist, and author who has served in the Nigerian Senate since May 2003.

He was born on May 12, 1962, to the royal family of the Late Igwe Mathias Ekweremadu in Amachara Mpu, Enugu State.

Ike is a member of the People’s Democratic Party and has been a member of the Nigerian red chamber since 2003. 

He has served in the 6th, 7th, and 8th Senate House

Ike attended Boys Secondary School, Umueze Awkunanaw and St. Dominic’s Secondary School in Ugiri, Imo State for his secondary education before heading to the University of Nigeria for his bachelor’s degree and master’s in law.

He also possesses a Doctor of Philosophy degree in law from the University of Abuja, Nigeria.

Ike Ekweremadu’s political career began when he was elected Chairman of the Mpu Town Union in Enugu State. He was thereafter voted to the Aninri Local Government Council as Chairman.

Ekweremadu was appointed Chief of Staff in the Enugu State Government House and then Secretary to the Government of Enugu State, a position he held until 2002.

Ike Ekweremadu ran for Senate for the first time in 2003 and was elected. He was elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the Peoples Democratic Party ticket to represent the Enugu West Senatorial District. He was re-elected in the subsequent senatorial elections in 2007 and 2011.

He was appointed Deputy President of the Senate in 2007. As the deputy, he was tasked with awarding committee chairmanship posts to the southeast zone, making decisions that numerous senators found disagreeable. Ike Ekweremadu was instrumental in easing tensions over Ojo Maduekwe’s controversial appointment to a ministerial seat in July 2007.

In September 2009, Ike Ekweremadu was chosen co-chairman of a commission to oversee the primary elections for the PDP candidate for governor of Anambra State. 

In September 2009, he was elected president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and he served on an ad hoc commission tasked with restoring constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

After being elected as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament in August 2011, he became the Speaker of the regional parliament. In 2011.

He ran for the office of the senate again at the 2015 general election and won. He was re-elected as the Senate Deputy President.

On February 23, 2019, Ekweremadu was re-elected as senator for the fifth time in a row but this time, losing his bid to become the deputy president of the upper chamber to Ovie Omo-Agege.

Ike is married to Lady Nwanneka Ekweremadu, PhD, with whom he has four children.
