Top African Automobile Manufacturers

By Balogun Kamilu Lekan

Africans have a massive desire for cars, but practically all of the vehicles they purchase and use are imported. Most of these automobiles are used. Thus, their import taxes are substantial.

The development of locally owned auto manufacturing businesses in Africa has lagged behind the continent’s demand for cars.

But a few automakers have made a big difference in the sector’s expansion.

Below is a list of the top African automobile manufacturers

1. Nigeria – Innoson Motors

Entrepreneur Innocent Chukwuma, born in Nigeria, established the Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company. Innoson is the first technology business in Nigeria to produce automobiles.

At least 500 cars constructed in Nigeria by Innoson have been created for a price ranging from N1.5 to N3.5 million. Innoson also receives remarkable patronage from the Nigerian government.

Pickup vans, SUVs, and buses are just a few of the many vehicles that Innoson assembles at their facility in Nnewi, Anambra, Nigeria. The Innoson Fox, Innoson Umu, and Innoson G5, an SUV, are a few of its models.

2. Kenya – Mobius Motors

In 2010 Mobius Motors was established with the African market in mind. To compete with the pre-owned cars that predominate the East African automotive industry, the business applies reduced design concepts to create effective and affordable vehicles.

The cost of vehicles built for African roads is around $10,000.

3. Ghana – Kantanka Cars

Dr Ing. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka started the Kantaka Automobile Company in Ghana.

Kantanka makes both saloon and four-wheel drives. The firm also sells SUVs, like the Nkunimdie and the Kantanka Opasuo.

Some Africans and Ghanaians already drive some of these vehicles.

4. Uganda – Kiira Motors Corporation(KMC)

Unlike other automakers in Africa, Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) has a unique set of interests. A hybrid electronic car is something the Ugandan automaker is interested in developing.

It was started by the University of Makerere engineering students in 2014 after they took part in the Vehicle Design Summit, which was started by MIT students in 2006. The Ugandan government assists the business.

In its line of cars, KMC offers the Kiira EV POC, Kiira EV Smack, and Kayyoola Solar Bus, all of which have 40AH and 207V battery banks.

The kind of vehicles made by Kiira could portend a new era for Uganda’s auto industry.

5. Morocco – Laraki

It was established in 1999 by Moroccan businessman Mohamed Laraki.

The company first produced yachts before transitioning to the production of opulent supercars. Laraki Fulgura, its first vehicle, was built in 2002.

It sells its 2013 Laraki Epitome Concept for $2,000,000. Its main features are its 1100 Horsepower (RPM), V8 engine, and a top speed of around 175 mph.

Larakis was listed as one of the most expensive automobiles in the world in 2015, costing more than $2 million each. They are purely conceptual vehicles that are manufactured specifically for each customer.
