2023: Peter Obi promises to update Campaign List after backlash

Published

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has acknowledged “erroneous entries” in the party’s presidential campaign list released earlier in the week.

The list, which features names like John Enenche, a military general who claimed the Lekki shootings evidence was photoshopped, generated backlash from Nigerians, including supporters of Obi.

A supporter, @Nkemchor_, “I am not going to make excuses for General Enenche. The OBIdient Movement is meant to usher in a New Nigeria rooted on Accountability to the Nigerian People
Nobody is perfect but I am of the opinion that he should publicly denounce his statement on End SARS to remain on that list”.

Some supporters nevertheless showed their endorsement of Enenche, claiming he has contributed to the #ObiMovement and deserves recognition.

A supporter with username @IruefiNG said; “The Enenche brothers. One is a military General, the other is a General-overseer of a church.

“These 2 brothers have given a lot to this movement. Paul Enenche was the first pastor to invite Obi to his church, the General was the first General & top official to endorse Obi.”

Reacting to the backlash, Obi in a press statement on Friday said; “I’ve received several calls of concern following the release of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council list.

“Admittedly, there were some omissions and erroneous entries in the list, hence the concerns expressed.

“In response, the Labour Party Chairman in the presence of members of the NWC addressed the issues during a press conference.

“In keeping with our commitment to accountability, responsiveness and transparency, an updated list will be issued in due course. I plead for patience.”

More knocks for Obi

Peter Obi’s response however does not sit well with some people like Fisayo Soyombo (@fisayosoyombo) who slammed him (Obi) for speaking from both sides of the mouth instead of owning up to the error.

He tweeted; “A presidential candidate who speaks from both sides of the mouth.

“A pres. cand. who talks about “omissions and erroneous entries” instead of pinpointedly addressing the ‘John Enenche entry’.

“A blind fanbase that brands every critic an enemy”.
