Adedoyin Ajibike Okupe, fondly called Doyin Okupe, is a politician and physician who co-founded Royal Cross Medical Centre.

He was born on the 22 March 1952 in Iperu, Ogun State of Nigeria, to Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe, a banker at the Agbonmagbe Bank.

Doyin was formerly  the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC)

He was also the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Education

Doyin attended St. Jude’s School in Ebute Metta, Lagos, and Igbobi College in Yaba for his secondary education before heading to the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Oyo State for a bachelor’s degree.

Doyin is a practising medical doctor and also an active politician. He has also worked as a publisher of the health newspaper Life Mirror.

Although Okupe is a medical doctor, he is also active in party politics. He was also once a publisher of a health newspaper called Life Mirror.

As a medical practitioner, Doyin worked at  St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, before cofounding the  Royal Cross Medical Centre (also known as Royal Cross Hospital) in Obalende with his colleagues, Dr Seyi Roberts and Dr Ladi Okuboyejo.

Doyin was the Managing Director of Royal Cross Medical Centre.

He started his political journey as a House of Representatives candidate of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the 1983 Nigerian parliamentary election during the Second Nigerian Republic.

During the Nigerian Third Republic, Doyin emerged as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC).

He was among the members of the NRC selected to observe the collation of the 1993 Nigerian presidential election results at the headquarters of the National Electoral Commission (NEC)

During the military junta of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Doyin was detained in October 1996.

In March 1998, during the aborted transition programme of Abacha, he was disqualified from participating in United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries.

At the advent of the current Fourth Nigerian Republic, Okupe was appointed Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo. 

Later, in 2002, he was a major contender in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries in Ogun State alongside Gbenga Daniel. 

In 2012, Okupe was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan to serve as his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs.

Okupe has also served as spokesperson for Nigerian presidential aspirants of the PDP, like President Olusegun Obasanjo, President Goodluck Jonathan, Bukola Saraki and Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Doyin decamped to the Accord Party from the PDP in 2017. He was then expelled from the party when he accepted to become the Chairman of the Campaign Media Council of Bukola Saraki for the 2019 presidential primaries of the PDP

Ahead of the 2023 general election, Okupe joined the Labour Party, where he stood as the running mate and vice presidential candidate until a substantive candidate was picked.

Doyin was alleged to have embezzled 702 million Naira from the $2 billion arms deal scandal traced to former National Security Adviser Colonel Sambo Dasuki.

He was then arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja on a 59-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering and diversion of funds.
