Nigerian musicians with Grammy Nominations 

Femi Kuti

London born Nigerian musician is at the top of the list for this numerous Grammy nominations.

Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti which is his real name is the son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist.

He got his first Grammy nomination in 2003 for his album Fight to win. See the list of nominations below.

Burna Boy

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, stage name ‘Burna Boy’ is the second on this list not just for his two nomination, but taking home a Grammy.

Burna Boy’s album ‘Twice As Tall’ won the award for Best World Music Album in 2021.

His first Grammy nomination came in 2020 when his album ‘African Giant’ got nominated for the same award he later won the next year.

Wizkid

Although it didn’t earn him a Grammy, Wizkid’s Debut single ‘Holla at Your Boy’ really brought him to the limelight since its release in January of 2010.

Wizkid whose real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun kept releasing his unique music throughout the years, which eventually led to him working with international acts like Drake, Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Tinie Tempah. 

He was recognized for his work with Beyoncé on Brown Skin girl. The song won the Best Music video award in 2021.

The singer’s ’Made in Lagos’ album has also been nominated for Best Global Music Album 2022 and his Tems featured song has been nominated for Best Music Performance.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

Seun Kuti

Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti is the youngest son of his father, Fela Kuti. He assumed leadership of his father’s musical group Egypt 80 at the age of 14, after his father passed. 

In 2018, Seun and the musical group released the “Black Times” album wich earned them a Grammy nomination in 2019 for the Best World Music Album.

King Sunny Ade

King Sunny Ade and Late Wife, Ajoke Adegeye

Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye MFR, stage name ‘King Sunny Ade’ is a Nigerian jùjú singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.

In 1984, the Juùjú singer’s 1983 album ‘Syncro System’ earned him a nomination for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording in 1994.

In 1999 his album ‘Odu’ also earned a nomination for Best World Music Award.

Babatunde Olatunji

Michael Babatunde Olatunji was a Nigerian drummer, educator, social activist, and recording artist.

His 1997 album ‘Love Talk Drum’ earned him a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Award in 1998.

Kah-Lo

Faridah Seriki, stage name ‘Kah-Lo’ is a Nigerian Singer song-writer. She featured in Riton’s Rinse and Repeat in 2016. The song got nominated for Best Sance Recording in 2017. 

Sikiru Adepoju

Sikiru Adepoju is a Nigerian drummer, multi-instrumentalist, and recording artist. 

The Global Drum Project that featured Mickey Hartz, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo, which was released in 2007, win the award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2009.
