Abramovich relinquishes control of Chelsea

English Premier League club Chelsea, announced on Saturday evening, that Russian Roman Abramovich is giving up his power as owner – This announcement is linked to the Russian war in Ukraine and the sanctions announced by Western countries.

Roman Abramovich is no longer chairman of Chelsea. “I’ve always made my decisions in the best interest of the club,” said the billionaire, according to a statement released by Chelsea on Saturday night: “I remain committed to these values. That’s why today I’m delegating to the trustees of the Chelsea Charitable Foundation Management and support of Chelsea FC.”

The full text of the Abramovich statement:

“In the almost 20 years that I have owned Chelsea FC I have always seen my role as the custodian of the club whose job it is to ensure that we are as successful today as we are today, while building something for the future while also playing a positive role in our communities. I have always made my decisions in the best interests of the club. I remain committed to those values. That is why today I am delegating to the trustees of the Chelsea Charitable Foundation administration and care of Chelsea FC I believe they are in the best position at this time to look after the interests of the club, the players, the staff and the fans.”

Abramovich has always seen his role in “almost 20 years” as the owner of the London club around team manager Thomas Tuchel and the German internationals Kai Havertz, Antonio Rüdiger and Timo Werner as the guardian of the club whose job it is to ensure that we are as successful as we are today”.
