On January 26, 2022, D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) an education program that seeks to prevent use of controlled drugs, in a statement to TMZ, accused the TV Show ‘Euphoria’ of glorifying teenage drug use.

The statement reads “Rather than further each parent’s desire to keep their children safe from the potentially horrific consequences of drug abuse and other high-risk behavior, HBO’s television drama, ‘Euphoria,’ chooses to misguidedly glorify and erroneously depict high school student drug use, addiction, anonymous sex, violence, and other destructive behaviors as common and widespread in today’s world”

Zendaya, real name Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, who is part of the cast for the show has spoken up, defending the show.

She explained that the show isn’t a pedestal for virtue to teach people what they can and cannot do, but it is to help people feel less alone in their struggle with addiction.

“Our show is in no way a moral tale to teach people how to live their life or what they should be doing. If anything, the feeling behind Euphoria … is to hopefully help people feel a little bit less alone in their experience” she said.

Before the start of the second season in January, the actress had warned that Euphoria is not for every audience, specifically stating that the show touches topics that are sensitive and some people may find that offensive.

“I know I’ve said this before, but I do want to reiterate to everyone that Euphoria is for mature audiences. This season, maybe even more so than the last, is deeply emotional and deals with subject matter that can be triggering and difficult to watch.”

“Please only watch it if you feel comfortable. Take care of yourself and know that either way you are still loved and I can still feel your support. All my love, Daya.” she wrote in the warning statement.
