Twitter users have reacted to a suggestion of N10 billion GoFundMe for Peter Obi’s presidency by BudgIT’s co-founder and CEO, Oluseun Onigbinde.

Former governor of Anambra state, Peter Gregory Obi, on Tuesday disclosed his intention to contest for presidency in 2023 despite signs of interest from former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

Peter Obi who was the running mate of Atiku in the 2019 presidential election in an interview with an online medium had said; “All the elections that I followed in the past, the party that I belong to today, the PDP made a pronunciation and took a stand. At least in 2019 when I was involved, where I can say Atiku graciously chose me as his running mate which I remain eternally grateful to him for, the party decided that the candidate should come from the North and that was what the party decided.

And I believe that the party owes it a duty to say what their stand is. If their stand today is South, be rest assured I am aspiring, if they say North, I can’t do otherwise or they chose the option that everybody is free, then, of course, you will be hearing from me”.

Onigbinde, following Peter Obi’s expression of interest for the presidency posted on his verified Twitter handle; “A N10bn GoFundMe for Peter Obi will be great starter for those who want crowdsource Nigeria’s next leader. This will change the dynamics with the space hijacked by moneybags”.

Reacting, @Azeezolatunjis1 said; “Go fund me for someone who is on Pandora paper, How did he become a saint of a sudden. I don’t belong anywhere is a scam in the end”.

Concerned about other arms of government, @Ambassadorof9ja asked; “Will dey GoFundMe the NASS? Wat of d governors, a group of “immortals” dat can do and undo? Will they GoFundMe d godfathers\tribal warlords dat can make/mar the government. D only thing I’ll GoFund is STRUCTURE. Until we invest in the structures, make we dey do am as we see am.”

In the spirit of budgeting and quotation, @RealSolaKuti said; “To win a presidential campaign you required around $2bn. Roughly a Trillion Naira plus plenty change. The logistics of a campaign and election with 200,000 polling units is not a joke. It means you need a 1m man army at the minimum. 5 people per polling unit.”

Worried about the present affairs of a typical Nigerian on the street, @accops231 said; “Tun tun ti dey ooo…una no dey fit stop to they amaze person for this street. How much have you guys contributed for the poor on the street or even contributed to construct a bad road? Well una done old no one can tell you how to spend your hard-earned fund. So enjoy.”

Declaring his support, @arinzecharly, said; “If Peter Obi is serious to become nigerian president..i will activate all my social media account…support a GOFUNDME (atleast to avoid cabalisation excuse) and set aside a 6 digit naira for his campaign…..maybe we can still flex this country before we MOVE!”

Also in support, @Neo_officiall, said; “On God I will contribute to this. Peter just has to lead this country”.

Against the idea, @tijanihabeeb, tweeted; “Those that crowdfunded Buhari couldn’t call him to order later ooo, I won’t be a party to this”.

Another user, @Segolopade, said; “If you like gofund $10B for Peter Obi. An Igbo presidency is a mirage at this present time. Election time is a perfect time to pay back. The hatred displayed against Buhari & the north should at least count for something. People should learn to build bridges & not burn them”.

Questining Onigbinde’s intention, @IsuphJt, in a quoted response to the Tweet said; “Dude is shopping for Chief Executive of MDA should Obi be a part of next Govt. Don’t be deceived by this carefully wrapped Self-promoting-Venture…”.

Meanwhile, Onigbinde has clarified the post was not an endorsement for Peter Obi.

In a follow-up post, he said; “Please, I only made a suggestion based on conversations on this space. I am not interested in raising the funds or managing it.

“For records, my tweet is “for those interested” and want to make a big statement. It’s not an endorsement for Peter Obi.”
