1. Govs, NLC doubt fuel consumption, NNPC demands N3tn for subsidy [Punch Newspaper]

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday took a swipe at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation over what they described as the mismanagement of the fuel subsidy regime.

The NGF and the NLC, according to a statement by the forum’s Head, Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, said this as part of the resolutions of their meeting in Abuja. They particularly doubted the NNPC’s fuel consumption figure.

The mother of former speaker of Kano state House of Assembly, Hajiya Zainab Danja who was kidnapped at gunpoint has regained her freedom.

The International Monetary Fund has retained its 2022 growth forecast for Nigeria at 2.7 per cent and increased 2023 projection by 0.1 per cent to 2.7 per cent.

The IMF had in its October report last year projected a 2.7 per cent growth rate for 2022 and 2.6 per cent for 2023.

In its January World Economic Outlook report released on Tuesday, the IMF downgraded its growth forecast for sub-Saharan Africa to 3.7 per cent and 4.0 per cent for 2022 and 2023 respectively from 3.6 per cent and 3.9 per cent forecast in its October 2021 WEO report. Read more.

4. FG wants NASS to re-add N103bn to 2022 budget [NewsWireNGR]

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari has requested the National Assembly to restore N103 billion earlier deleted from the 2022 budget.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the cabinet meeting at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister said that the FEC considered the request to make additional funding provision to enable the government to meet incremental fuel subsidy payment in the 2022 budget. Read more.

5. Oil Price surpassed $90 per barrel  for the first time Since 2014 [NewsWireNGR]

Brent oil on Wednesday surpassed $90 per barrel to strike the highest level for more than seven years, rattled by geopolitical tensions in Ukraine and supply concerns in the Middle East.

European benchmark Brent North Sea crude rallied as high as $90.42 in afternoon London trade, attaining a level last seen in October 2014.

The contract later stood at $90.23, up 2.3 percent from Tuesday. Read more.

The lawmaker representing Ekiti South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Abiodun Olujimi, has withdrawn from the primary election of the Peoples Democratic Paty (PDP) in the state.

Senator Olujimi is one of the key aspirants vying for the PDP ticket in the June 18 governorship election in Ekiti State.
