The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has boosted his defence team as he employed the service of Mike Ozekhome, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

This was observed as the lawyer arrived at the federal high court, Abuja, in the company of Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the leading member of the legal team.

Confirming the development, Ozekhome told journalists, “Yes, I’m now in the legal team and that’s why you’re seeing me in court.”

NewsWireNGR had reported that barely 24 hours to the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the federal government (FG) filed fresh charges against him.

Nnamdi Kanu at the start of his trial was charged with a seven-count treasonable felony. With the new charges levelled against him, Kanu would be arraigned with a 15-count charge.

The charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015 was signed by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), M.B. Abubakar.

Reacting to the new charges, Ejiofor, in a statement, said the federal government is scouting for an opportunity to truncate the court proceedings today.

The lead counsel said the amended charge is the “worst kind of abuse of legal process”, adding that it was aimed at “needlessly prolonging proceedings in the cause”.

“This is indeed a joke taken too far as the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) is now scouting for an opportunity to truncate tomorrow’s proceeding, knowing fully well that the smokescreen charge is dead on arrival,” the statement reads.
