Members of the Olubadan-in-Council who were elevated to Obas by the Ajimobi-led administration in Oyo state have agreed to drop their crowns and revert to High Chiefs.

This decision was taken at the meeting of the council held at the Oja’ba Palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by six members council, namely High Chiefs Owolabi Olakulehin (Balogun of Ibadanland), Tajudeen Ajibola (Otun Balogun), Lateef Adebimpe (Osi-Balogun), Kola Adegbola (Ashipa Balogun), Eddy Oyewole (Ashipa Olubadan) and Hamidu Ajibade (Ekarun Olubadan).

The Otun Olubadan, Senator Lekan Balogun, who is likely to be the next Olubadan had earlier hinted that the affected obas are ready to revert to their original positions following the directive of the state governor, Seyi Makinde, that they should revert.

Former attorney-general of Oyo state, Michael Lana, had said it is illegal for the current Otun Olubadan, Senator Lekan Balogun to become the next Olubadan of Ibadan land.

In his letter to the governor, he said: “Under that declaration and all relevant law, no Oba can ascend to the throne of Olubadan.

“In other words, as long as the high chiefs still cling to the title of Oba, they cannot ascend to that throne and any installation of any of them during the pendency of that suit is illegal, null and void.

“It is in line with this legal situation that I advice, most humbly, that you should withhold any approval of any high chief to become the 0lubadan so that you will not also join in the desecration of Ibadan chieftaincy customary law.”
