The 75 abducted pupils of Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State who were abducted on September 1, 2021, have regained their freedom.

Their release was announced by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) via its verified Facebook page overnight.

On September 1, the police had said 73 students were abducted from the school following an attack by bandits.

“The abduction followed the invasion of the school by large numbers of armed bandits,” Zamfara State Police spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu had stated in a statement.

Shehu said that Police rescue teams were working with the military to secure the release of the pupils.

In the late hours of Sunday however, NTA broke the news of their release.

“The seventy-five students of Government Day Secondary School Kaya in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State abducted about two weeks ago regained freedom,” NTA’s Facebook post reads.

It is not yet clear if any ransom was paid before the pupils were released as no other details were shared.
