Tokyo 2020: Nigeria’s Table tennis reps bow out of Olympics as Aruna Quadri loses

Nigerian table tennis star, Quadri Aruna’s time at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has come to an end after he was defeated by Tsuboi Gustavo of Brazil in the third round of the men’s singles 

Aruna, the Team Nigeria’s captain, lost to Brazilian, Gustavo Tsuboi, in a highly competitive game. He lost 4-2 (15-13, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 7-11, 6-11) at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. 

With his defeat, all Team Nigeria’s representatives in table tennis have been knocked out from the Olympics. 

Other Team Nigeria’s representatives in table tennis who have been eliminated from the competition are Funke Oshonaike, Offiong Edem, and Olajide Omotayo. 

Quadri’s elimination means all the Nigerian representatives in table tennis —  Funke Oshonaike, Offiong Edem, and Olajide Omotayo — have been knocked out from the Olympics. 

Multiple Olympic Games participant Funke Oshonaike was sent packing from the Tokyo 2020 Games in the preliminary round. 

Also, Olajide Omotayo on Saturday in Tokyo crashed out of the men’s table tennis singles event of the ongoing 2020 Olympic Games. 

Omotayo was humiliated with a 0-4 defeat by Tiago Apolonia of Portugal. 

Tokyo Olympics is Aruna’s third appearance at an Olympics event having featured in London 2012 and Rio 2016 previously.
