Armed robbers on Thursday attacked a commercial bank at Otun Ekiti, Moba Local Government Area in Ekiti with dynamite and killed a police officer.

The deceased officer was reported to be the security officer attached to the Bank.

According to reports, the robbers attacked the bank around 5 pm and destroyed the security door at the entrance using dynamite. It was also reported that they carted away chunks of cash.

In a refuting statement, the Ekiti State Police Command claimed the robbers were unable to gain entry into the bank.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu said; “There was a bank robbery incident today in Otun-Ekiti at about 5:00 pm, and in the process of shoot out between our men and armed robbers, we, unfortunately, lost one of our men, the commissioner of police has ordered a discrete investigation into the incident in ensuring the armed robbers are arrested and brought to book”.

Abutu however urged members of the public to go about their normal business while assuring them of police readiness to protect their lives and property at all times.

The Chairman of Moba Local Government Council, Mr Michael Aborisade, has also condemned the attack, describing it as quite unfortunate.

Aborisade also asserted that the robbers were unable to enter the bank’s major vault, popularly known as ‘strong room’.

“I was not happy that the armed robbers escaped because they had the guts to dare our security agencies by attacking the bank during the day.

“They killed a mobile police officer attached to the bank and this is why I am not happy that they escaped.

“We sympathise with the family of the deceased police officer. It is quite unfortunate. We pray God to grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss.

“But the good news is that they were unable to enter the bank’s strong room and that no member of staff was killed during the operation,” he said.
