Nigerian Govt announced plans to only employ individuals with first class and second class upper

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to only employ individuals with first class and second class upper as teachers.

The news was disclosed on Saturday by the permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of education, Sonny Echono while monitoring the conduct of the 2020 October Diet Batch B Teachers’ Professional Qualifying Examinations, (PQE) on Saturday.

Echono said that starting from 2021, the Ministry would limit the entry point of teaching to only employ the most qualified individuals.

“By 2021, we will not engage teachers if they don’t meet the particular threshold, we are now limiting entry point of teaching only to the best who are qualified, we will engage individuals with second class upper and first-class divisions.”

“We will make arrangements for conversion programmes for people who have these categories of results from other fields, they need to learn pedagogy, methodology, through the NTI and the TRCN, and they will undergo specific programmes that will empower them to teach.”

He also added that the Ministry is working to increase workers’ salary and create improved renumeration packages for some special teachers.

“We are arranging an enhanced remuneration package for such teachers, those teaching sciences and peculiar allowances for teachers taking students with special needs.

“We are currently working on a special teachers’ salary scale.

“We are finalizing the figure with National Salaries Income and Wages Commission and as we speak, some of them have been proposed.

“We are working with stakeholders on making a presentation with NUT. We are also considering views of employers like state governments and private school owners.”
