Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed his Special Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie @Laurestar as Electoral Commissioner for Delta State at the Independent national Electoral Commission, INEC.

Announcing her appointment during Tuesday’s plenary session at the National Assembly monitored by NewsWireNGR – Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan who began the days proceedings starting by reading a letter from the President on the Confirmation of Appointment of three Nominees as Executive Directors of the Board of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

He then followed by reading another letter from the President on the Confirmation of the nominees for Appointment as Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (@inecnigeria)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), set up in 1998, is the electoral body which oversees elections in Nigeria.

Before her appointment, Ms Lauretta Onochie, the media aide to President Buhari had only recently said the #EndSARSNow campaign is championed by Yahoo boys.

She made this wild claim on twitter following the demands made by citizens to put an end to SARS.

“I have no doubt that there are some staff of SARS who are unprofessional in their dealings with the public, same way we have unprofessionalism in the Army, Mainstream Police, Customs, Civil Service, Public Service, traders, lawyers, doctors, journalists, teachers, pastors etc.” – she wrote.

Ms Lauretta Onochie has been known for not only posting unverifiable news across social media but also accusing the President critics of lack of patriotism.

Thousands of Nigerians marched in Lagos and other cities to demand an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, or SARS, a police unit accused of extrajudicial killings and abuses.

The government announced Sunday the unit will be disbanded, but many Nigerians are skeptical, as officials have promised an end to the unit and its alleged abuses before.
