LAWMA responds to allegations of non-payment of salaries

The acting Managing Director/CEO of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, has disclosed that the salaries of its road sweepers who are mostly engaged by contractors will be promptly paid henceforth.

In a statement made via it’s official social media channel, LAWMA stated that its attention has been drawn to pockets of protests and agitations over issues bothering on “sweepers contractors” monthly payment. The LAWMA authority revealed that the payment for April has been disbursed to contractors for onward payment to the sweepers.

One of the sweepers, had complained in a viral video that the agency hadn’t paid salaries for 3 months.

Responding, LAWMA said “the sweepers are engaged by contractors who are responsible for their upkeep, despite this, however, the Authority and indeed the State government prioritise their welfare and well being, hence, they are given adequate care, support and protection.

The agency noted that it made April payments to sweeping contractors, for onward disbursement to their staff members and that efforts are being made to ensure prompt release of subsequent payments, not only for May but all future payments, ” the statement reads

The new head of the waste management agency, Ibrahim Odumbomi, who resumed in an acting capacity on May 18, 2020, following the suspension of the former MD, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, averred that LAWMA appreciates the work of the street sweepers particularly their working as essential workers during the COVID-19 lockdown.

”The Authority and indeed the State government appreciate the great work our workers are rendering, especially during this Covid-19 pandemic period and we, therefore, assure them that we will continue to pay optimal premium to their welfare. We want to use this medium to appreciate everyone who has shown concern and understanding towards our efforts in ensuring a consistent and sustainable cleaner Lagos.
