Just In: Nigerian Senate passes N10.805trn revised 2020 budget

The Nigerian Senate Thursday passed the N10.805trn revised 2020 budget at Plenary, the 11th day of June 2020 into law.

The report of the Committee on Appropriations on the 2020 Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill (SB. 425) was presented before lawmakers by Senator Barau Jibrin.

And, Senator Barinada Mpigi seconded the motion that the Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Appropriations on the 2020 Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill (SB. 425).

In his presentation, Senator Barau provides a background for the reason behind the Committee’s assignment of the revised 2020 Appropriation Bill which he says was necessitated by the impact of the Covid19 which adversely affected the oil price and by extension.the revenue projections of the Nigerian government.

Addressing lawmakers, Senator Barau noted, that, the Committee which worked with their counterpart in the House of Representatives, interacted with all stakeholders including the executive & members. After some observations the Committee recommends; That the Senate do pass the 2020 appropriation Bill of N10,805,544, 664,642.

On his part, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele said that Nigeria cannot be an exception to what is going on as a result of Covid19.

He added that, this is not the time to shy away from key issues including the development of critical infrastructure because one of the ways of tackling recession is for the economy to spend her way out of recession.

Senator Basiru Ajibola adopted what had been said by Senator Opeyemi. He noted, that contrary to insinuations that the Senate just takes hook, line and sinker, what is brought by the executive, the Senate has brought back items that are people oriented in the budget.

Senate dissolves into the Committee of the Supply for the clause by clause consideration of the 2020 Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill (SB. 425).
