PDP Sweeps Akwa Ibom Re-run Elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has won last Saturday’s re-run elections in all five constituencies where the exercise was conducted.

The results published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that in Itu, Mr Idongesit Ituen of the PDP polled 12,043 while Mr Idongesit Ekpanya of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 2,938.

In Etinan, Mr Aniefiok Akpan of the PDP polled 10,977 and Unyime Ekwere of the APC polled 1,780.

In Ibesikpo/Asutan, Mr Aniekan Uko of the PDP polled 10,288 and Mr Gabriel Akpan of the APC polled 1,955.

The election result from Ikot Ekpene/Obot-Akara, showed that Mr Idongesit Ntekpere of the PDP polled 23,900 while the APC’s candidate, Mr Augustin Mbeh, polled 2,428.

In Oron/Udung Uko, Mr Effiong Bassey of the PDP polled 7,625 while Mr Victor Okon of the APC, who withdrew from the race about 12 hours before the election, polled 298 votes.

In Uyo senatorial district, where a senatorial re-run was also conducted in some units and wards, Senator Bassey Akpan of the PDP won the election with 256,110 votes against his closest rival, Mr Emmanuel Obot of the APC.

The re-run election into four State House of Assembly seats in Akwa Ibom State was adjudged peaceful and without any major hitch.

Election observers said that the INEC recorded success with its experiment of conducting accreditation and voting simultaneously in the Saturday election.

Election materials arrived voting units early in areas visited by Channels Television.

High turnout was recorded at most areas in Ibesikpo Asutan, Etinan, Obot Akara and Ikot Ekpene Local Government Areas while a few units had less than the registered number.
