The Speaker, State of Osun House of Assembly, Rt Hon Najeem Folasayo Salaam, has said that Social Media plays a major role in Nigeria politics today. Speaking at his residence in Osogbo, Hon. Salaam described social media as the “mouthpiece of the electorates.”

“It is no news that social media was very instrumental to the emerging change in Nigeria politics,” the returning House of Assembly member said. “Nigerians now rely on social media for up to date information about what is going on politically in the country and beyond. Also its role in the Change Revolution heralded by the August 9 2014 gubernatorial election in the State of Osun cannot be overemphasised.”

He stated that social platforms such as; Twitter, Facebook, Nairaland, YouTube, and Instagram played a vital and cogent role in upholding the will of the electorates in the just concluded general elections. He urged Nigerians to use this power responsibly and only share information that will inspire and unite the nation.

“I recently began following the trend on Twitter and observed how how Nigerian youths constructively engaged a Senator-Elect. It was quite impressive and encouraging. The advent of the social media is indeed a global breakthrough. However, we must use it to promote our good side and culture. We should consciously push out stories that will bound us together at all times,” he said.
