To guard against the spate of internet scammers and criminals, the Forum of Spokespersons of Security and Response Agencies (FOSSRA) has advised the public to beware of swindlers that often use fake identities with offers of employment and counterfeit business opportunities in exchange for money and for other criminal activities
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) hosted the monthly meeting at the weekend in Abuja which was well-attended by spokespersons of military, security, intelligence and response agencies.
The forum urged the public to cooperate with the government in the fight against the increasing internet scams and online crimes by verifying all offers and report suspected swindlers to the appropriate authorities for necessary actions.
While noting that more arrests are being made on regular basis as the online fraudsters are becoming daring in their exploits, the forum said government has put in place measures and enabling laws to deal with the perpetrators but the public must assist in exposing the criminal elements to the authorities.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Chairman of the forum and Director of Defence Information Major General Chris Olukolade urged Nigerians to be security conscious and vigilant at all times as most criminals dwells and hide within their communities.
Olukolade said: “Security agencies can only succeed when the citizens report strange movements and suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. We cannot identity a terrorists within a community by his look, dress or mannerism. The people who live with them should be able to identify suspicious and strange traits that can be reported for investigation and necessary actions.
“We also urge the media to show more understanding with the government and security forces for fair reportage on the efforts to address the security challenges in some parts of the country.”
Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi, while welcoming members of the forum to the Agency commended them for the synergy built in the management of crisis information to protect the common national interest. Sidi who was represented by NEMA’s Director of Finance and Accounts Mr Hakeem Akinbola said it was obvious that the steps taken by the Federal Government for the security of lives and provision of necessary assistance to those affected by the security challenges cannot be achieved in isolation without the cooperation of all agencies, the media and general public.
