Why I Didn’t Join Arsenal Years Back – Yobo

Former Super Eagles skipper, Joseph Yobo says he almost joined Arsenal years ago but the move was blocked by Arsenal. According to the defender who is currently a free agent after being released by Fernebache, Arsene Wenger wanted him as a partner for Sol Campbell in the Gunner’s central defence but the move was rejected by his then club, Everton.

The player who has the most appearances ever for the Nigerian national team said this when reacting to the recent transfer rumours linking him with a move to Arsenal on a free transfer to help solidify the Gunner’s defensive frailties. He noted that he is not aware of the Gunner’s recent interest but confirmed interest in the past.

 “I read Arsenal was interested in me, it was news to me. There is no formal contact with anybody. “I know Arsene Wenger admires me a lot and wanted me to replace Sol Campbell some years ago, but Everton blocked the move. “He wanted me to partner Kolo Toure in defence; I was younger then. “If negotiations are taking place, I am not aware, maybe the club is speaking with my agent”, he told reporters
