Ibrahim Shekarau Resumes, Meets Striking Polytechnic Lecturers

Former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, on Thursday, resumed office as the new Minister of Education and immediately met with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP.

The Polytechnics have been on strike since October last year. Mr. Shekarau’s resumes and immediately moves to resolve the strike by the lecturers. The meeting, which commenced at about 3:25 p.m., is being held at the Education Ministry secretariat in Abuja.

Shekarau was earlier received by the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, along with his supporters to the Ministry .

At a brief ceremony at about 9.30am, Shekarau expressed appreciation to President Goodluck Jonathan for the opportunity to pilot the affairs of the Education sector in Nigeria.

He pledged to work with all stakeholders to move the sector forward. Addressing his supporters in Hausa language, Shekarau sought their prayers for success in executing his new assignment. Outgoing Minister, Wike expressed readiness to work as a team with the new Minister to develop the education sector.

The new Minister later held a meeting with the management staff of the Ministry where he sought their cooperation.
